About Island Sky Alliance (ISA)
The Island Skies Alliance (ISA) is a non-profit association committed to advocating for and promoting decarbonization and capacity-building within the Philippine aviation industry.
The Island Skies Alliance (ISA) initiative brings together key experts, Industry players, regulators and stakeholders to accelerate the country's transition to Green Air Transportation with concrete implementation projects by 2030
ISA is aligned with the Aviation and Airports Sector's intergovernmental state action goals and plans
Challenge
Acme Steel faced a multi-faceted challenge:
Decarbonizing the aviation sector presents a complex array of challenges due to its heavy reliance on fossil fuels and the technical and economic constraints involved in transitioning to more sustainable alternatives.
Addressing these challenges requires a multifaceted approach, involving technological innovation, policy support, economic incentives, and international cooperation.
The path to decarbonizing aviation is complex but critical for achieving broader environmental and sustainability Net-zero goals by 2050.
Since 2021, Philippines started its Aviation decarbonisation journey by started multiple initiatives (Policy, SAF, Carbon Credits, Airports…)
Solution
Based on 4 Technical Working Group (TWG), About Island Sky Alliance (ISA) is a powerhouse of expertise and action, driving forward projects and initiatives with a focus on achieving specific, often technical, outcomes while ensuring alignment with broader ESG strategic goals.
IMPACT holds a leading position in the three main Technical Working Groups (TWGs):
SAF Strategy and Roadmap
Analyze the feasibility of SAF local production, and accelerate Airlines’ adoption, in the Philippines
Mapping SAF feedstock options
Assessment of developing a domestic SAF supply chain
Economic feasibility of SAF production and adoption
SAF lifecycle from production to airport storage
SAF industry funding possibilities
Recommendation to Government on Policy instruments to accelerate SAF production and use
CORSIA
Listing & understanding CORSIA requirements and impacts on the Philippines’ national regulation
Philippines Strategies for Implementation Legal Framework and Compliance
Identify offset opportunities and preferential sourcing/procurement of locally produced carbon credits
Assess the quality of Natural-based-solution (NbS) Philippine projects that could be eligible for CORSIA
Explore the feasibility of Philippines-based standards development CORSIA
Green Finance
Sustainable Finance for Green Aviation Projects mapping
Strategies to leverage financial mechanisms in supporting the aviation industry's Green transition (SAF, CORSIA…)
Mapping of the key domains, within Green Aviation, which are in financial needs (sector, amount, sizing…)
Develop a roadmap outlining strategies to promote and implement sustainable finance instruments for accelerating the adoption of sustainable aviation
Background
Island Skies Alliance is an evolution and an instinctual response from the initial success of the One PH Aviation, Together We Fly advocacy campaign of the Department of Transportation, Aviation & Airports Sector. The spirit of a united voice and action kicked off in the first-ever Aviation Summit on the 27th and 28th of September 2023, themed Philippine Aviation: Ready For Take-Off organized by European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP). The chamber’s aviation committee was instrumental to the first summit’s success and continues to be critical in gathering all industry
At the summit, “Full Speed Ahead” was the key message and the call to action of the Department of Transportation for Aviation and Airports DOTr) Undersecretary Roberto Lim reporting on the department’s ongoing work and commitments to building more airports to enable economic and sustainable development, part of the Department’s Secretary Jaime Bautista’s flagship program of Comfortable, Accessible, Safe, Sustainable and Affordable CASSA elevating transport services to global standards.
The Island Skies Alliance aligns with the Aviation and Airports Sector’s intergovernmental state action goals and plans by ensuring that founding members’ mission, values, and goals have PH aviation, country, and countrymen front and center of their purpose to be part of the alliance.
The advocacy campaign, One PH Aviation, Together We Fly launched during the first-ever attendance of the Philippine aviation delegation at the Singapore Airshow held from the 20 to 25 February 2024 signaling that Philippine aviation is definitive in its direction towards Sustainable, Safe, and Smart PH Aviation, 2030 and Net-Zero Carbon Emissions 2050 on a global level.
